Artists of African descent explore better representation and the politics of their work. Imagine freedom of expression where Western views are not dominant, what is needed for change, and what is possible in the future. Do you remember the story that broke lockdown and saw people take over streets and parks? The global pandemic and the world-wide call for change and affirmation that Black Lives Matter threw existing inequalities into sharp focus. The future we want to see emerging from this pandemic is a decolonised one. But how does one begin to imagine decolonised futures when dominant Western worldview shapes our present and our collective imagination? The Sub-Sahara Advisory Panel (SSAP) created ‘Siku Za Mbele’ (Kiswahili) or ‘Days Ahead’/‘DyDDiau o’n Blaenau’ as a space for creative reflection. For the past 15 months, the youth-led (SSAP) Youth Leadership Network (SYLN) has worked with 16 young creatives of Welsh-African heritage to explore deep narratives, trace colonial tropes and create new knowledge in their stead. Supported by The National Community Lottery Fund’s (TNCLF) ‘Emerging Futures Fund’, the project created a safe space where young creatives could reflect on what we are emerging from, where we are, and where we want to go next. Following a public call out, 16 participants were selected to take part in the project and during our weekly online sessions, we invited Black, African and Diaspora artists to share their practice and journey with us, and discussed the importance of creativity, activism and heritage. New artworks, narratives and understandings grew from workshops with leading Black and African creatives. But we also found new questions; what unites the creatives involved in this project? From Black Welsh to White African, Mixed Heritage, Third Culture Kid, Asylum Seeker to Butetown Native or British Ghanaian the identities we carry are individual and unique, and many of us know more than one sense of self. Artist Hazel Ravu describes her hidden selves like an undercover agent, code-switching to fit in as the only Black girl in her school and neighbourhood. There is no one Black or African identity. And yet, this cohort of artists know they carry these labels – it seems the luxury of ‘neutrality’ is reserved for white artists only. To be a Black Artist can be a source of joy, as Gabin Kongolo’s performance ‘My Skin Is My Logo’ proudly states. It can also be a reductive label and a source of conflict. Sean Suter’s poems question Where Do I Belong? African creativity is not confined to Western labels and disciplines, it is multidimensional and cross-disciplinary. We have brought together poems and stories, performance, paintings, zines, photographs and graffiti for this online exhibition. Our artwork explores digital and physical spaces, from Instagram to the pub to football stands, reflecting on how we inhabit our bodies and environments. Through the artworks we share with you, we are telling our stories, speaking of our struggles and experiences in a beautiful way, vibrant and powerful and in your face. We are not a monolythic people, but a movement, rich with global connections. We occupy multiple spaces, at the margins, at the centre and in-between. Some of our work will connect universally, some may challenge or confuse those who do not share our lived experiences. Through this showcase we invite you to question hierarchies and labels. Our artworks reflect on where we come from, where we are, and where we want to go next. We share with you our points of view and our journeys. As Charles Obiri-Yeboah writes in his pilot script: Try this fufu, this jollof and this waakye… Yusuf Ismail’s mural, titled ‘My City, My Shirt’ is part of the project and has already provoked discussions across Wales and beyond. Mr Ismail reiterates that: “a public mural like this will be a powerful affirmation and provide daily comfort and encouragement. For Cardiff City FC supporters, and the wider population it can be an eye-opener, a point of view they may have previously missed, and hopefully a step towards changing mind sets.” Fadhili Maghiya, Director of Sub-Sahara Advisory Panel, said: “A lot has happened over the past year and the murder of George Floyd will go down in history as one of those ‘where were you’? moments. From BLM demonstrations to reviews of statues and monuments associated with slavery in Wales, the introduction of Black History to our new Welsh curriculum and wider societal and institutional changes in relation to race, diversity and inclusion; change is in the air and as we live in the present, we can look back and reflect, and look forward to imagine how we can make this World a better place to live” “There is rich creative talent within Black and ethnic communities and this project has not only brought these young creatives together, it has developed a momentum and space for the public to see what we are capable of. Their artistry represents the youthful energy that led BLM marches across Wales and beyond. The exhibition will be on the 25th May from 1800 as part of Africa Day and commemorates the anniversary of George Floyd. Register via https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/emerging-futures-by-creatives-of-welsh-african-heritage-exhibition-launch-tickets-152656857771. Young creatives taking part on the project include Abraham Makanjuola Temeka Davies Onismo Muhlanga Sizwe Chitiyo Mujib Yahya Bethan Williams Chembo Liandisha Cynthia Sitei Gilbert Sabiti Hannah Newell Hazel Ravu Joshua Odonkor Nicole Ready You can view workshops, artworks and learn more about the project via our online showcase

27 May 2pm Free, bilingual, accessible (BSL and captions) Following on from our first Beyond The Cities event in March 2021, join Dirty Protest on 27 May at 2pm (UK time) for our second free, interactive, bilingual, accessible (BSL and captions) online Zoom event that brings together artists, producers and communities who live or work in Wales' rural and post-industrial areas. If you're in the valleys, countryside, small towns and villages, farmlands, mountains, hillsides, by the sea and estuaries of Wales... we want to hear from you! For this second meeting, we want to start building a stronger network. Our guest hosts: Jonny Cotsen Lisa Jên Brown Angharad Tudor will run sessions to get the room talking and sharing. We want to know - Who is in the room and what support and resources do you need to do your best work in a rural context? What projects do you have, and what do you want to make happen? What partnerships are you looking for to make your work happen? What do you want from a rural performing arts network? Is it true that urban culture is the "norm" and what should artists, venues, and policy and decision makers do, so that rural artists are better represented and supported? What is 'rural' Welsh culture, is it distinct to 'urban' and are these divisions useful? And more...! There will be time for you to tell each other about your own projects and who you want to partner with, share your ideas and help us to start building a network of rural performance artists and producers in Wales. The event will be live captioned and BSL interpreted. We will also have a Welsh translator in the room and we actively encourage your contributions in Welsh. Funding is always the scariest F word, right? Especially if you're coming into an Arts Council application never having done it before - it can be super scary. The White Pube are bloody legends anyway, but even more so as they've launched a library of successful funding application here. It's mainly focused around ACE and England based artists, but it's always mega useful to be able to see what others have done. Hurrah for sharing resources! Hurrah for funding transparency! xx

Despite the recent hardships faced by the music industry in Wales, Forté Project, an artist development scheme for emerging musicians, is proud to announce nine new artists selected to embark on its 2021 programme. Forté Project did not give up the fight in 2020 and as a result, has secured Arts Council of Wales and PRS Foundation funding, allowing the project to expand beyond its original South Wales regions for the first time and reach new artists across the country. Thanks to this, the chosen artists, aged between 16-25, will be given professional industry support designed to progress their early careers, during a six month mentorship programme. They will receive masterclasses from top names in the industry such as Romesh Dodaganda (Grammy-nominated producer: Bring Me The Horizons), Corey Sanders (Songwriter for Katy Perry), Warp Records (home to Brian Eno and Aphex Twin), Bethan Elfyn (BBC Radio Wales), and Davey Newington (Boy Azooga). Naturally, the programme has been shaped to suit a more Covid friendly way of working with all classes taking place digitally, and the addition of some new pandemic-proof lessons. Including, how to professionally live stream and record tracks at home, which is more important now than ever before. On top of this, another new yet relevant aspect of the programme this year is working with Mental Health UK to deliver a digital mental health support package tailored to each act. Forté Project’s Lead Officer, Spike Griffiths says, “Even though the past 12 months have been crushing for the music industry, it feels great to finally say that something good has emerged from such challenging times.” “It’s important that we adapt our ways of working to be relevant right now which is why we’ve introduced live streaming, home recording and mental health support packages for each artist.” “The new way of working has allowed us to expand outside of South Wales and discover the incredible quality of music emerging from Wales. Obviously, this all made things very difficult for the panel in the final selection process.” Over five years, Forté has worked with over fifty young artists to build their profile, generate opportunities and provide the necessary knowledge to help propel them into a career in the industry. Former acts who have previously benefited from Forté support include Welsh producer EÄDYTH, pop act HANA2K and singer-songwriter Otto, who signed to Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart’s record label in 2020. The nine artists joining the project in 2021 are: Aderyn - Infectious, spiky indie-pop guitar music LEWYS - Instantly danceable Welsh language indie rock Demzie - Viscerally honest rap artist from North Wales Elina - Gorgeously self-produced teenage dream-pop Hemes -  Infuses Arabian scales with modern day dark-pop KINGKHAN - Creatively packaged emo rap artist already featured on Radio 1Xtra Mari Mathias - Luscious Welsh language folk tones Mojo JNR - Slacker rock project from 24-year-old Josh David-Read The Honest Poet - Soulful energy with an unforgettable voice  Listen to the full playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6RRw99mG6YNMV5qyxtQlce https://www.forteproject.co.uk

The Painkiller Project is a monthly playwriting competition with a £150 prize for each winning play. Two plays will be selected each month and released fortnightly as podcasts (available here). So far our plays have featured Noma Dumezweni, Toby Jones, Miriam Margolyes, Pearl Mackie and Jessica Barden. Our aim is that the repetitive nature of the competition helps to make the project feel collaborative and cyclical - like theatre. Before submitting your script, please make sure that: Your name, email address and any personal details do NOT appear anywhere on your script. This is to prevent any unconscious bias that might otherwise occur. Scripts that do include information that reveals your identity will not be considered. Your script is no longer than 1500 words, including directions and character names It includes a title page with a title, a synopsis and a casting suggestion for each character (feel free to be ambitious!)
